Words Without Friends . . . The words I won't use.

Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.  ---Napoleon Hill

Today's blog is about words. Since I am a writer, you may have guessed that I love words. I love how some words have double entendres, while others are very certain singular in their purpose. I also love the growth of vocabulary, how it changes and evolves, just as we do. This is the main reason I love watching television. I love studying what is said and how it is said and learning creative ways to say things that have been said thousands of times over. I study the works of Joss Whedon and Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy because in these works, I find the truths of life and of communication which is absolutely necessary in order to enjoy life. At least for me.
There are very few words that I absolutely hate. Words that if said in my presence will provoke what I believe to be a rational anger. I see these words as an almost immediate reflection of one's intelligence and civility. The words I am about to talk about are commonly used by some and I'm very careful to choose my battles with most people.
For instance, it's only if you're in my most select group of friends that you know never to use the words SHUT UP. These words for me automatically denote disrespect. When used, someone is trying to shut down someone else, whether it is emotionally, physically, and/or mentally. I have never had a positive reaction to these words and use them only in extreme situations where I have been pressed to the point that I generally am completely fried, and can't deal (not that that makes it okay). So, in other words, I ask that people not say these words. Hush, be quiet, even shushing me is fine but please…
Looking over the other words that have negative effect with me, I can find only a few other words that I absolutely abhor hearing. On that list are these words:

 1.) Idiot
 2.) Retard(ed)
 3.) Faggot
 4.) Nigger
 5.) Dumb
 6.)   Stupid

Now I realize that there other words that can be added to this list, but these are the five top triggers for me. I don't know if it's because they were used at a younger age negatively, but I can't think of any way that any of these words can be used to build someone up, only tear someone down.
I'm sure that some will argue that these words have their uses and that they're not as bad as I may view them but to me these words are more harmful than words like frakking, fricking, or even fucking. I would rather someone say hell or damn or even better, if you feel the need to insult someone research foreign languages. Merde means shit, but doesn't it sound prettier? And it makes you sound more intelligent.
I don't know that the world would be a prettier place or better place if we stopped using these words but I know for me that if you use these words you are showing that you have no consideration for my feelings or the energy that I fight very hard to project.
I am totally an advocate of the First Amendment, free speech all the way. But just because some things can be said doesn't mean they should be.

You can change your world by changing your words... Remember, death and life are in the power of the tongue.  --- Joel Osteen

Resolutions, Alter Egos, and Tigger, Oh my! . . . A mmM/MMonday Interview with Aurelia A Burrow

Just for reading this interview, and commenting on it, you are entered to possibly win one or two FREE books. SO DO IT! And you'll be glad you did!

Wt - I'm Wt Prater, and I'm here today with author Aurelia B Rowl aka Allie A Burrow, who is doing this interview for Just Write and SO Gay. Thank you so much for allowing us to feature you today, Aurelia.
AR -  Hellooo, lovely to be here! And Happy New Year to you, just in case I forget later.
Wt - Same to you, my darling. Have you already starting planning some New Year resolutions?
AR - I have indeed - I try to come up with some every year. At least one 'personal', one 'professional', and one 'other', usually a reading challenge. Expect a post on my blog with a look back to last year's and then my new ones for 2013 very soon.
Wt - Awesome. I look forward to reading your blog more. Now, you and I are relatively new friends. We met through the Breathless Press FB group, which is publishing my third short story, Exercising His Options. How did you get involved with that group/ press?
AR - I happened to see a submission call-out from another publisher, asking for Christmas/Holiday stories. It sparked an idea in my head and I had to sideline the project I was working on to give it a go. As it turned out, my story grew too long for the original call-out I'd seen, but I noticed that Breathless Press were also looking for Holiday-themed stories. I already knew one fellow writer that had signed with them, so decided to give it a go. It was actually quite scary, as it was the first story I'd written 'the end' on, and my first ever full submission. Thankfully, a contract arrived in my in-box within a week so I didn't have long to wait.
Wt - And tell me about that story.
AR - Christmas is Cancelled is a contemporary romance set in the UK during the Christmas holiday and is based around a chance reunion with Tilly and her older brother’s best friend, Dean, at a time when her carefully constructed world has collapsed around her. It is also a tale of unrequited love, or at least that’s what Tilly thinks.
Wt - And that came out December 21st, right?
AR - Yes, that's right. It just about scraped in before Christmas, with the holiday stories being the theme for the entire month.
Wt - And is Breathless Press the only house you're with right now?
AR -   Yes, I'm a very new writer and only have two complete manuscripts under my belt so far. The second has also been contracted by Breathless Press to be featured in their Serviced anthology, but it will go out under the name of my raunchier alter-ego, Allie A Burrow. (Another anagram!)
Wt - That leads me to my next question: For authors who plan to write YA and write saucier stuff too, why do you recommend creating pseudonyms?
AR - I've always intended to write contemporary romance and young adult as Aurelia - to be honest, I never even dreamed I'd write anything else, but decided to push myself out of my comfort zone when I wrote the piece for the anthology. When it got accepted, I knew it couldn't go out as Aurelia as it is just too explicit.
Whilst Christmas is Cancelled is quite steamy, it is still the story of a monogamous loving relationship between two people. Whereas Allie can write anything - assuming I can get it past my internal censor - so the two have very different styles and identities. When a 16/17 year old searches my back list (when I actually have one) I don't want them to be confronted with the 'naughtier' books that I would feel inappropriate, if it were my child stumbling across them.
Wt - Ok, that makes sense. So tell us a bit about your naughtier books. LOL.
AR - Funnily enough, the one I've written so far is still a monogamous loving relationship between two people, complete with happy ending - the difference is the language. It is far more explicit and graphic, using words that I can't even bring myself to say. It was fun though, and I now have another story in the pipeline which should challenge me even more, as there are...um...more characters involved.
Wt - So . . .give us a run down of your current Works In Progress.
AR - Oh gosh, there are too many to mention individually, but they are all up on my website. The main ones I'm focusing on for the start of 2013 include the project that got sidelined earlier this year called Their Last Goodbye, and also book one of a series I am working. The series is called Peer Pressure, and book one is called Bye Bye, Black Sheep. I then have four further books for the series planned already: Pussy Kat, Pussy Kat (Where Have You Been?), Sing a Rainbow Too, Rock-a-Buy Baby, and The House That Jack Built.
I have also been asked for the follow-up story to Christmas is Cancelled, featuring the secondary character, which I do have a rough outline in my mind for, so I certainly have enough to keep me busy for a while. Roll on September when I can write full-time.
Wt – And you have two websites, http://www.allieaburrow.com and http://www.aureliabrowl.com/ right?
AR - Yes, that's right, and two separate blogs to go with them: http://blogspot.aureliabrowl.com and
http://blog.allieaburrow.com Of course, Allie has all the 'over 18' settings, whereas Aurelia doesn't. LOL. Another reason to keep the 'naughty' stuff under a different pen name. It's not much good writing YA stories then have a blog/website, the young adult isn't old enough to access.
Wt- Alright, last question: Are there any questions you wished I'd ask, or one you never want to be asked again?
AR - I'd say I've had it pretty easy - thank you! - but was half-expecting to be pounced on for Sing a Rainbow Too, my first foray into a M/M contemporary love story.
Wt - Well, since you mentioned it, lol, tell us about it. (Pounce, Pounce. . . sorta like Tigger!)
AR - Ah, the wonderful thing about Tiggers, the Tigger's a wonderful thing...
The Peer Pressure series is all about Lords and Ladies but with a modern contemporary twist, set in the present time. As I delved into my characters, I discovered that one of my secondary characters was not the person he portrayed himself to be. It is only when he gets his own story in Sing A Rainbow Too, that we know for certain he is gay, but he is in complete denial. He has already met his soul mate but refuses to believe it, in fact, he's getting married to his soul mate's sister instead.
I want the story to be about his coming to terms - and accepting - himself, detailing the emotional journey he must go through before he can commit to any relationship. I would even go so far as to say, I'd love this to become a book that a troubled gay teen or new adult could pick up and help them come to terms with themselves as well. But I know that's asking a lot.
Wt - I am so excited about this series!  And will this series be YA or Adult oriented?
AR - The series will be marketed as adult, as it contains sex - much like Christmas is Cancelled - but it is not explicit, nor graphic. I want to treat this book the same as I would treat any other book, so there will be a 'consummation' scene at some point, but written in a way that is integral to the story and the characters, rather than gratuitous. I also have the advantage of total control, as I am intending to self-publish, so I can be very mindful of the potential audience.
Wt – Again, so excited. . . So I want to say thank you so much for being here. I look forward to great things from you.
AR - Thank you, it's been fun.

Aurelia B Rowl is a contemporary romance author, aspiring young adult writer, blogger and social network addict. She also masquerades as Allie A Burrow, her raunchier alter-ego, set to hit the virtual bookshelves in March. When she hasn’t got one of her ‘writer’ hats on, she is mum to her son and daughter, aged 5 and 3 (although turning 6 and 4 next week), wife to her very understanding husband, and ‘boss’ to their 8 year-old rescue dog. She studiously ignores the housework for as long as possible, choosing to play with the kids, or spend the time either creating her own stories or losing herself in somebody else’s. Check out her websites and blogs! And also search for her on virtually every social network, cuz she's there.

End of Year Review (Movie Style)

This year I decided to do things a little different that I normally do. Instead of numbering the best and worst of films, I just decided to list ALL the movies that I've seen and give a one or two  sentence summary as to why I loved or hated them, or tried hard to forget them. I know that everyone sees the movie has a different opinion, and those opinions are widely varied. So just keep in mind that this list is based on my opinions for whatever they're worth. (There is a list of movies at the end of this that I have not seen and want to. And a list of movies that I will NEVER watch.)  Please feel free to leave your comments about my reviews . . . and leave your own objections and agreements as well. If there is a movie that you don't see listed, please feel free to suggest it.

The Best
Cabin in the Woods – Broke most minds, and stereotypes. After waiting almost two years, I will definitely say it was worth the wait.
Avengers - The best superhero movie to come out in the last few years. My favorite character was of course, the Hulk. Puny God.
Magic Mike - Minus the last 15 minutes, Channing Tatum. Half naked. Need I say more?
Hunger Games -Minus the motion cameras, one of the best adaptations of the novel to come out, perhaps ever.
Savages – Very dark, but brilliant movie.
The Dark Knight Rises - Definitely one of the years best, even with the raspy voice.
Step Up 4 - At least it grew in morals as the franchise grew.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green – Very inventive and cute movie.
The Perks of being a Wallflower - Had some great lines and overall a great story. Perhaps a new classic.
Won't Back Down - Every movie that has a strong teacher and a “power to the people” message should be this lucky.
Pitch Perfect -One of the best musicals of the year, perhaps of the last few years.
Twilight:Breaking Dawn 2 -Definitely the best Twilight movie, perhaps the only movie to be better than its book.
The Hobbit - Very beautiful scenery, incredibly long. But interesting plot line.
Brave – Strong female characters. A mother's worst nightmare, but her Father's greatest hope.
The Woman In Black -This movie got nine screams, but I hated the ending.
Rock of Ages - While I'm not the biggest fan of 80s music, it had great plot lines and was very comical in a lot of places.

The Worst
Extremely Close and Incredible Loud - This movie started off depressing and quickly spiraled into place that I don't want to ever go again.
One For the Money - I honestly don't remember this movie, other than paying for it.
Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter - Another movie that I was very excited to see, but was very, very bored with.
Joyful Noise - This movie should have been spectacular, however, the reason it is on the Worst list are three words: Dolly Parton's face.
Chronicle - This story reminded me of Paranormal Activity without the scares. And again crappy ending.
Good Deeds - Tyler Perry always has such amazing potential, as did this movie until it decided it was going to become a dramatic comedy.
A Thousand Words - Again another movie with so much potential, and then it died.
Dark Shadows - This one was dead from the beginning. And should be buried deeply somewhere and forgotten.
MIB 3 - Granted I'm not the biggest fan of this particular franchise, but I still think that they could have made this one less predictable and more entertaining.
Snow White and the Huntsman – Except the few times we saw C. Theron's character use magic, was there anything even slightly interesting about this movie? For me, NO.
Ted - This felt like a really long episode of Family Guy, but much, much worse. This was one of the two movies I ended up walking out of.
The Amazing Spider-man - This had the pleasure of being the second movie I walked out of. The dialogue was written by William Shatner and the plot… I don't think there was a writer.
Medea's Witness Protection - I love me some Medea but this movie left me. It just left me.
Paranorman - Another movie with so much potential that was completely predictable, without humor, and no reason to watch it again. Ever.
The Apparation - I sat through this movie for 78 minutes waiting for something to happen. Then it did: the credits rolled.
Wrath of the Titans - This movie angered me more than any other movie of this year. Imagine if someone decided to go into your mythology and kill off half of your gods. I hated this movie so much.
American Reunion - I blocked this movie out completely. Julie had to force me to remember that I had seen it.

These are movies I haven't seen, but I want to . . . Keep the Lights On, The Raven, What to Expect . . ., Hope Springs, Sparkle, The Possession, The Words, Looper, Sinister, Paranormal Activity 4, Rise of the Guardians, Silver Linings, This is 40, Cloud Atlas, Hitchcock, The Guardian, and Les Miserables

These are movies I am open to watching, but I'm not paying for . . . The Vow, This Means War, 21 Jump Street, Lucky One, Moonrise Kingdom, Total Recall, The Campaign, House at the End of the Street, Frankenweenie, Lincoln, Taken 2, Life of Pi, Here Comes the Boom, Alex Cross

These are movies I will NEVER watch, unless tied to a chair and forced (Clockwork Orange Style) . . . Underworld 4, Ghost Rider 2, Mirror Mirror, Three Stooges, Battleship, Prometheus, That's My Boy, The Expendables 2, Hit and Run, Premium Rush, Resident Evil 5, Judge Dredd, Trouble with the Curve, The Man with Iron Fists, Wreck It Ralph, Django Unchained, The Guilt Trip, Anna Karenina, Skyfall

A Challenge For Me. . . No FaceBook for a Month!

A social experiment: Could you spend a month without Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube? Would your creativity and productivity improve if you spent all the time you're currently using on Facebook and other "social media" promoting yourself and other such things actually writing instead, I've asked myself? I guess I'll find out in January. I am removing all social media and emails from my phone, and only allowing myself one hour a week on Facebook and other social media to see if I can discipline myself into writing more and "everything else" less. The only way to reach me will be through my blog, and my website. That's it . . . for January, at least. And we'll see where I need to go from there. So, during January, if you need me, the only email that i"ll leave connected is author@wtprater.com But, don't fret, I will also be updating my blog at least three times a week. So, check out how long I can last at this challenge at www.jwasg.blogspot.com

The Five Santas, A Few Last Thoughts, And ONE Last Chance to Win!!

Since the world is suppose to end on the 21st, this may be one of the last posts I ever make, so I want to end it all on a happy note. So here a few last thoughts/rules :

1.) Evil, even in the form of churches, will always end. . .
Westboro Baptist Church Reassigned as a HATE group!  (Article Included, click link)

2.) Respect your Elders, because if you don't...
Karma is this Bitch! (Video included, click link)

3.)  Always carry spare toilet paper. ( The only issue is: As a gay man, how can I ever have butt sex again, knowing that Mitt Romney's face has been there? )

4.)  Enter to win free stuff.

The hop runs from midnight Dec. 17th  to midnight Dec, 19th.

You get three entries at each blog stop. One for answering a question at each blog stop, one for following each blog and another for commenting. You don't have to do it all but it gives you a better chance if you do. So even if you stop by just one blog you can win. Hope you will keep hopping though.

Wt's Question: What is the name of the lead character in Wt Prater's Shattered Mirrors?

Send info to (careydoucet@yahoo.com) Please send it all in one email. If she gets an email for each blog, you will not qualify for the grand prize. It would just be too confusing to figure out that way. So one email with all the hop info.

Example of hop email for contest:
Your name and email at the top. (You only need this once.)

"The Next Big Thing" Blog Hop

Every author loves the idea that their book will be the next "must read" of the decade. We write hard, edit hard, and promote hard with that ambition. But sometimes we spent so much time focusing on this steps that we forget the fourth and fifth steps of the process, which are: Pray for luck, and form every alliance you can. Most readers don't choose between authors, they want them both. Period. So in this effort, we are banding together to promote each other in The Next Big Thing Blog Hop!

In the words of Tabatha Heart, "This blog hop is like a game of tag. One author posts and tags five other authors who link back to their website the next week and tag five new authors. If you follow the blog hop long enough, you’re bound to find some books you’ll love! Maybe you’ll even discover a book that ends up being the Next Big Thing."

I was tagged by her, so to learn more about her and/or her book, Visions in Stone, check out her website!

And so, without farther ado, the questions for this blog hop . . .

1: What is the working title of your book? The Six Sides of Love (The Chosen Family Chronicles- Volume One)

2: Where did the idea come from for the book? The first short I wrote for the "Love is Always Write" queue from my Goodreads group.

3: What genre does your book fall under? Contemp GLBT fiction, Drama

4: Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? I'll be blogging about this in the future, because the book has 18 characters, all of which are featured.

5: What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Dealing with everything from breast cancer, sex changes, and weight issues, these six stories show the importance of having a strong chosen family.

6: Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? I have several presses in mind to publish with, so here's hoping.

7: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? It's still working, I'm hoping to finish it by the end of January

8: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? I'm not really sure, but open to suggestions after you read it.

9: Who or What inspired you to write this book? I am inspired by everything, including my chosen family who are all characters in their own rite.

10: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? With this one book having so many characters, everyone can relate to someone in this book, if not several someones. Also it's written in short story format, with all the shorts making one larger story arc.

Here is a list of authors who will be joining the hop for week 27 on December 26th. I hope you’ll visit their blogs next week and learn more about their books. Maybe one of them will become your new favorite author! And with that . . . Tag . . . YOU'RE IT! . . . .
